Case Discussion Series #16 || ASLP Vrushali Shinde

Speaker: Ms. Vrushali Shinde, MSc SLP

In discussion here is an eight-year-old child with Autism Spectrum Disorder and complex communication needs who began therapy as non-verbal, with poor auditory processing and strong sensory-seeking behaviour. A sensory-integration-based speech approach focused on body regulation, deep-pressure and movement activities, visual schedules, and gentle oral-motor work using a kazoo. As her regulation and listening improved, she started following one-step directions, attending to cues, and imitating words. Over time, she progressed to using single words and action verbs, showing clear gains in listening, imitation, and early verbal communication.
